Some Consequences of Hard Water You May Not Have Realized

water-and-tapIn a previous post, we looked at the trouble with hard water in a plumbing system. Hard water is unfortunately a common occurrence in the U.S., and it’s difficult to prevent through municipal water treatment plants because the minerals in hard water (magnesium, calcium, gypsum) tend to enter the water after it leaves the plant. The minerals seeps through ground water into the municipal pipes and continues on to homes and businesses.

The biggest threat from hard water is to the fresh water pipes and appliances in a home, the water heater in particular. But there are some other consequences of hard water we haven’t discussed.

Will a Tankless Water Heater Really Never Run Out of Hot Water?

tankless-water-heaterWhen it comes to installing water heaters in Clovis, NM, we are big proponents of new technology. The newest advances for storage tank water heaters has made them more energy efficient than ever before. But we often recommend homeowners try a different type of water heater technology to take advantage of new methods for heating up water, such as a heat pump water heater, which uses heat from the air to warm up the water.

We’re especially excited about the tankless water heater. Although the tankless water heater isn’t exactly “new” (the first versions were invented in the late 1900s), the technology that has made them useful and affordable options for households is a recent development. When people hear about the benefits of these water heaters, they’re often excited about their possibilities.

We want to address one of those benefits, the one that most people focus on: a tankless water heater means you can’t run out of hot water the way you do with storage tank system.
