We’ve previously written about signs that you need to call for a plumber to fix your water heater. One of the most obvious signs is when water starts to pool around the base of the unit or any other area around it. We can’t overemphasize how important it is to call for professional plumbers as soon as possible when you suspect water heater leaks. These leaks will rapidly worsen, leading to major water damage and a completely failed water heater.
Below we’ve listed some of the reasons that a water heater might begin leaking. This is to help you better understand how to care for your water heater—don’t try to do the repairs yourself! That’s why you have us around.
- Water pressure spikes: When the water pressure inside the tank of a water heater rises too high, it will create leaks at connection points. The water pressure is regulated in the system with a valve and an expansion tank. But if these should malfunction, or too much sediment builds up in the tank, the water pressure will start to rise. This needs to be remedied right away.
- Corrosion: Rust and other forms of corrosion are major enemies of water heaters. Fortunately, water heaters are designed to resist corrosion for most of their service lives. Should corrosion get a grip on the water heater, the weakening of the metal will allow leaks to start. Sometimes technicians can replace the corroded parts; other times, the best repair is to replace the entire water heater.
- Amateur repairs/installation: One of the reasons that you should only entrust water heater services to licensed professionals is to avoid problems like a leaky system. Amateurs often use poor soldering techniques, and this makes it easy for leaks to spring up at connectors. Call skilled technicians to fix the problems so they won’t reoccur.
